Ever since Europeans found the new continent which we call America today, over three million black natives were sold from Africa to it to be the lowest slaves in the past three centuries. They had borne tragic lives so many years. Though there were several times of resistance movements for the rights of the black, Americans even have gone through the Civil War which almost ruined the U.S., they still could not be totally free and earn most people's respect yet. After reading Claudia Rankine's “Citizen”, it becomes much clearer about the racial discrimination in our real daily life.

Claudia Rankine is a poet who is good at writing lyric poetry, her book “Citizen: A American Lyric” reveals a tragic fact that even as a powerful developed country which believes in freedom and democracy, there are still so much inequity in United States. Tess Taylor has said that her book is a perfect book to appreciate racial dynamics at play today as a powerful collection. Claudia collects those upset moments closely, and uses them to tell its readers about living in blackness and whiteness. Even though black people are also American citizens, they still suffer from unfair treatment in all respects. In the book, she recounts racial aggression and racial discrimination in ongoing encounters in the media, in the 21th century life -- our real daily life.

Legally, citizen means a natural person who has the nationality of a certain country, and according to the constitution of this country, he has the rights and obligations. From the point of view of its generation, as a legal concept, the citizen is closely linked with the democracy. However, in Rankine’s prose, imagery and poetry, "citizen" becomes a powerful proof of the contemporary racism in America.

“Citizen” has won the National Book Critics Circle Award in poetry in the US, perhaps to some extent, the public are shocked deeply by the truth it tells. In Rankine’s book, racial aggression and racial discrimination takes place everywhere. In the school’s classrooms, gyms, at the supermarkets, in the bus stations, on the vehicle, at home, online, on TV. People post some disgusting essays to Facebook or vent to their friends about white privilege, calling for a conversation on race. Even when Venus Williams and Serena Williams are on the tennis court, or Zinedine Zidane is on the soccer field, they may be looked down upon by many white people because of their black blood. The irony is that when they won the champion or led the team to win, people started to flaunt their nationalities, saying, “She or he is one of our country.” That certainly would be ironic, wouldn't it? They can feel grief and sad just like everybody, after all! There are so many people who scorn black people from the bottom of their hearts, they carry out intentional offensives to the black all the time, in words and actions. Sometimes even if part of us don’t harm them deliberately, and some of those encounters are mild and insignificant, what we do seem to be just a casual move, it also expresses the most truest neglect of people’s heart. Thus, black ones bear too much stress, they begin to dare not to appear in public, they have lost the ability to talk and communicate with others, some of them even lose the courage to live in the world. Because of the white man's disgust, their life has a lot of bad. And then it's their resistance, some people may hate the society extremely and revenge on the society, which brings social unrest. Therefore, from all aspects, black people should gain respect as a citizen in a country.

There are so many shocking scenes happening every day.  In Rankine's word, on the bus, on the aeroplane, people are often ashamed to sit with the black. It comes down to no noisy spoken insults but the disgusting, fake tact of a whispering mother who forbids her daughter to sit next to a black passenger. A black child can be knocked down by a white child who he has never known without apology. This phenomenon is very common. White children are taught by parents to be far away from black people when they are pretty young, black children are taught by unfair facts to be far from white. This idea is taught to children from a young age and can’t be changed even when they get older and can distinguish right and wrong themselves.

Serena Williams once said that neither God nor NIKE Camp could shield her ultimately from people who thought she didn’t belong on their court in their world because of her black body. When hurricane Katrina attacked Texas, the rescue workers tended to rescue white ones as their first priority just as if their lives are less valued than those whites. However, as a reporter, she heard that a lot about what they wanted most was staying in Texas. What a tragic scene!

In a certain degree, Claudia Rankine’s “Citizen” cannot be regarded as poetry, we are inclined to call it records that narrates the unfair treatments the black people suffer. She has Jamaican origin, it may be assumed that she has suffered something bad, too. She can understand the pain of black people deeply. Through telling troubling rehearsals and brief encounters of recent news, Rankine puts everyone, as a white reader, on constant alert for any unconscious racism in oneself. She created a grand work which can warn and exhort us. Rankine reminds us there is nothing different between black people and white people.
