In the procedure of our growths, there are many images of heroes in daily life. Children admire Ultraman who always saves the city from danger, and teenagers regard the Marvel characters such as Captain American and Iron Man as big heroes, because they have advanced equipment and sense of justice. However, in the adult world, heroes seem to have different types. In western history, many legends about heroes are derived from Greek mythology. For example, the famous warrior Achilles usually known by public as the hero who is invincible and unsurpassed.

In addition, Heracles is a hero who achieved 12 heroic feats. Meanwhile, with sense of responsibility and justice, he does a great contribution to his country and people. These two heroes share the same tendency and give the public a subconscious that hero is person that is capable of dangerous situations and always contain great power. Still, there are existences of different heroes with different emotional feelings. Some heroes end up with good consequences but some are tragic and heartbreaking. When it comes to the hero with the tragic fate, Oedipus must have to be mentioned. He overcame the childhood experience of being abandoned and used his wisdom to solve the riddle to rescue the country and people, in the end, he still failed to escape from the fate. The whole life and experience of Oedipus make everyone feel regrettable and pitiful. After carefully reading through Oedipus the King, many ideas and inspirations strike my mind. I come up with a deeper understanding and sentiment for the meaning of heroes.

Oedipus, a noble man headed toward tragedy due to the prophecy. Because of his father's fault, he undertook the cause, which was given by Delphi, he should not have suffered. When he realized the prophecy, he decided to leave his own home to get rid of this terrible prophecy. Nevertheless, a fateful coincidence happened, he killed his biological father with no deliberate attention. Then, his kindness and intelligence let him to solve the riddle and accidentally married his biological mother, which everything happened to coincide with the prophecy that he always tried to break away. Is it really a destiny, or a fate? It is an unchangeable fact that the life of Oedipus actually turned out as the prophecy predicted.

When we consider his entire life from another aspect, will there be any different results happen to him if he was not that obsessed with the prophecy so much? In other words, the main reason that results in the tragic life of Oedipus is his deep belief in prophecy without a shadow of doubt. Oedipus is a wise man, before he spared no effort to solve the riddle, he worried about the people than anyone else. Additionally, he is a man with great responsibility, he tried to mobilize all resources to investigate the death of Laius. When the truth surfaced, he said “Now I’ve exposed my guilt, horrendous guilt, could I train a level glance on you, my countrymen? Impossible! ” (line 1515) and accepted the punishment frankly and bravely without using the special status as an excuse to evade.

All in all, he is almost a perfect leader with a kind, intelligent and responsible mind, his achievement for country and people is remarkable. Oedipus supposed to deserve a peaceful and genial end ultimately, rather than wandering in the barren hills. The extreme unfortunate fate of Oedipus makes me remind our ordinary lives. It is really common to hear the judges from people around you, and it is undeniable that these assessments which are usually not objective and contains many subjective factors can easily influence our emotions and even impact us a lot when we make decisions. The presence of these baseless evaluations is just like the presence of the prophecy of Oedipus, they are both illusory, unscientific and unsubstantiated. We should always remember that fate lies in our own hands. Everyone has the right to dominate their own lives, even God and Apollo can not influence. Also, one should insist his choice regardless others opinions. Only in this way, the life you obtained indeed belongs to yourself.

There is another main character in this Greek tragedy, Jocasta, a mother and also wife of Oedipus. She is generally considered as another tragic hero in the story. First of all, it is really hard for a mother to give her child away, especially when she grasped the truth that there is a little chance for her baby to survive and still default the behavior. However, Jocasta did it and she acquiesced in decision of Laius to abandon her three-day old baby, Oedipus. It is not proper if we definite Jocasta as a merciless or cruel mother. Her identity, as a queen, forced her to make choice between her baby and her country because of the curse. For the happiness and peace of majority people, she had no choice but giving up her baby powerlessly. In the aspect of wife, Jocasta is staunch and responsible. After the death of Laius, Jocasta, a poor widow, took over her husband's duties without any complaints. She mobilized the people all around the nation to paraphrase the riddle of Sphinx, and made her seconds marriage as a reward for the solver regardless of background.

Honestly, she contributed all she could to the country and people. But miserably, she did not realize that the riddle solver, the man she married, is her son as well as the killer of Laius. When Oedipus tracked down the murderer of Laius, the past was generally exposed to the air. At the time of appearance of the shepherd, Jocasta finally was aware of who Oedipus really is. When Oedipus tightly questioning her about the fact, Jocasta refused to tell him and begged Oedipus badly not to go on the research. Probably, Jocasta was trying to protect him from the ruffian truth, the words she said “my suffering is enough” (line 1164) maybe indicates the aspiration that it is enough for her to bear all the pain and mistakes. She wanted to keep Oedipus unknown and carry on his life as it supposes to be. Here, I have to say, Jocasta tried to protect Oedipus as a role of mother, though she did not act a mother's responsibility few decades before.

Jocasta is a woman with selfless mind, who devoted her entire life to her husband, her country and her children. Compared with other ordinary women, the decisions she made, the efforts she disbursed and everything she considered are all related to country and citizens. Namely, it is no exaggeration to say that she lived for others from beginning to end. When she realized what she had done, she was so shamed to face it and finally chose to suicide to end up her whole life. Of course, Jocasta is a hero, but unlike the hero as traditionally appears, an image of power and energy, Jocasta is the kind of hero who dedicated quietly and left in silence and devote entire life to others. Hence, the question came up in my mind again that what a hero really is? Every moment when I thought over about this question, the image and experience of Jocasta and Oedipus appeared. Maybe heroes are not only those who use super power to help people out of danger, but also those who devote themselves silently, such as Jocasta, and those who still have courage to fight for their own destinies even though they already suffered a lot, like Oedipus.

There is such a scene once touched me a lot. In the last episode of Band of Brothers, a grandson of a colonel who served the world war Ⅱ in Europe asked him a question, he said “grandpa, are you a hero?” The grandfather answered “No, but I served with a group of heroes.” A thousand people obtain a thousand views on meanings of heroes, just like there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people's eyes. The meaning and understanding of heroes related closely to the experience one went through. However, most of the people accepted that, regardless the fate and consequence, heroes always contribute themselves, in all ways.
