As we all know, Sigmund Freud was one of the most famous Psychologists in the history of human being. The biggest achievement of his contribution was that he founded the theory of psychoanalysis and his famous book, the Interpretation of Dreams. This essay is going to introduce some reflections over Freud’s Psychological Theories. He did fundamental jobs for the application of medicine for psychology, and this work of combination of two fields was considered as an important remark in the history of psychology.

As one of readers of this great works, I also have some concerns towards Freud’s professional achievement. As far as I am concerned, the achievements of the interpretation of dreams will be determined by if this book could help people to raise the feeling in the bottom of their heart and they help people to speak out all of their feelings. People should not be silence because of they think they are unimportant, or stupid (Frye, 1957).

Moreover, an individual could not contribute to all of the dreams, and provided specific interpretations of dreams immediately. Instead, people could only think of one or several parts of a dream because dreams are very comprehensive and it is a combination of various psychological elements. Dreams are viewed as the achievement of willingness, for which we cannot make them come true in real lives. For example, Freud believes people will dream about becoming a rich man if they cannot be a rich man in their real life. In people’s dreams, individuals’ emotion always comes with goals, which can make people to modify their dreams based on their basic needs(Frye, 1957).I believe Freud’s opinions about distorted dreams have advantages. However, to some extent, it lacks evidence to support his opinions. I believe Freud’s studies lack of information because he collected evidence mainly based on dialogue. However, real science need objective evidence such as checking brain activities when people are dreaming. Freud concludes people’s behaviors and dreams while make them all because of unconscious sexual orientation. I think Freud have his own evidence to provide those theories because his working experience as a psychological doctor. However, I couldn’t totally agree with his comment about the interpretation of dreams as a reflection of daytime’s thinking because there is no evidence to support it. I believe people’s motivation are various, such as feelings of anger, hanger, and happiness, instead of simple sexual orientation.

Meanwhile, I quite agree with what Freud talked about dream’s constructions. At least, when we wake up, what we can remember about our dreams are based the modification related to our emotional goals. Based on his theory, my understanding is that there would be two kinds of steps in everyone’s psychological minds. The first step is to express the content of our dreams, while the second is we tend to check the role we would play in our dreams, which come to a modification or pretending of our dreams. Meanwhile, Sigmund Freud believes what we can be aware must be the second step. Freud was honored about his theories of these two steps in human’s dream. He believe these two steps help people to construct a whole system of dreams and all of phenomenon could be interpreted by these two steps. I believe the theories of two steps in the dream need to be studied over and over through psychoanalysis role-play and other scientific studies. I believe it is the only way for us to understanding people’s dream through evidence from studies instead of providing theories through life experience. Freud has stated that the most impressed part of the interpretation of dreams is the reminds of the past experience. Freud analyzed the conclusion of dreams based on others’ experience and considerations. However, he might overlook that there is some misunderstanding towards their dreams even it is for others’ themselves (Robertson, 2007). Thus, I believe Freud’s analysis of the interpretation of dreams is too much subjective. This analysis was not based on evidence and data based things, in which I believe the interpretation of dreams is not a type of science. I thin science is based long-term data collection critical thinking. If without these two points, it could be any thing like pseudoscience but not real science.

I also have the some experience. Several years ago, when I read the interpretation of dreams, we could hardly keep reading. And what I knew was that the first edition of the interpretation of dreams was in 1899, in which it was 115 years since now. Thus, Freud’s analysis of dreams was based on the social circumstance in that society and culture backgrounds, as well as the psychological issues and behaviors of people in that age. For example, during that age, people’s lives were totally different with what we have now. They do not have trains, airplanes, cell phones, and social media applications. I believe people in that age have different meaning towards their dreams than we have now because the same thought means different in two times thanks to the development of the society.

If we need to apply analysis in Freud’s books and theories, we need to put this information under the current situation and make it modified so that it can be benefit for current people. However, I believe what we need is the spirit of Freud. We need Freud’s spirit towards scientific studies, we need Freud’s spirit about psychological analysis, and we also need Freud’s spirit about his methodology towards psychology. The spirit means, specifically, Freud’s persistence and goals in conducting psychological studies. Thus, maybe you have some discrepancy about reading this book, but you should be respect about this big psychological scientist in the history of development of psychology and the founder father of psychoanalysis. At least, as a psychology learner and researcher, I don’t want to really apply those thoughts into my real life. What I want is to appraise his spirit and his methodology of psychological studies.

We could know that is important because every people have hopes to interpret their dreams. It is very difficult to help every to interpret dreams perfectly (Rudnytsky, 1987), but Freud’s interpretation of dreams gave up a chance to explain our dreams through a scientific perspective. I believe Freud’s theories and methods in interpreting dreams have advantages listed before. However, in order to better understand people’s dream, we need to interpret dreams more based on scientific evidence, while also seeing dreams from a dynamic perspective.
