The communication process, a two-way process in which the communicators try to achieve a shared meaning, is important for cross-culture communication. It not only includes verbal communication but nonverbal communication as well. Nonverbal communication is based on culturally agreed upon set of symbols, often governed biologically/involuntarily and comes simultaneously from a multiple of channels. In Spain, the nonverbal communication, including chronemics, eye contact, and postures, is different from that of Canada. In Spain, the concept of time, is seen more of circular and holisticconcept. Not like in Canada or the United States, where time can be lost or gained, Spanish people treat time as a holistic treasure (Hebze,2012). The Spanish have a reputation for “living in the moment” (Kooyers, 2015). In the Automobile industry, it is the same case that most workers work efficiently without overtime and value the time of leisure.

In terms of eye contact, another important nonverbal communication element, the Spanish culture also differs from the culture of Canada. In Canada, eye contact, which shows that one party of the communication is paying attention, communicates a sense of understanding and respect. In Spain, however, it is said that people maintain more contact when speaking but have less eye contact when listening. In the automobile industry, eye contact is of great importance, especially among the sales department because they are facing customers every day. When customers walk in to ask questions about cars and some even have purchasing intentions, the eye contact of the salesperson at the car dealership plays part of the role determining whether there can be a deal. Eye contact, and other non-communication cues in Spain automobile industry can enhance trust and likability of customers both in a B2B and a B2C business setting. When fostering relationship among suppliers and other partnerships, eye contact, body gestures as well as chronemics can significantly impact how the relationship goes.

Proxemics, the interpretation and understanding of space as applied with culture, as one of the nonverbal communication behaviors, also varies from cultures to cultures. Spain is more of an contact culture where people have less restraint with personal space and people touch more frequently in Spanish culture as compared with in Canada (Hebze,2012). In the workplace, people in Canada may feel offended when given too little space or touched too close. However, people in Spain may feel very comfortable with having physical contact with each other. On the opposite, people may feel more amiable when having contact with each other in the workplace in Spain, and it may stimulates business relationships in some occasions. Nonverbal communication plays an important role in communication in business setting. Foreign people should immerse themselves in the culture background when dealing with people native in the culture.

Regarding verbal communication in Spain, it is not as direct as that in Canada.  In the workplace specifically, Spaniards prefer to be careful about what they say and how they say it. People may wander around certain points and topics before getting to the real message behind during a negotiation. In addition, they may tell you what you would like to hear rather than the truth and avoid giving negative comments. It can be sensed that it is not a good condition or a severe problem arises when silence occurs. In this case, what we analyze above about the nonverbal communication cues plays an important role to inform you about the true message and interpretations behind the dialogue when communicating with Spaniards if you are a foreigner trying to conduct business in Spain with Spaniards (Katz, 2008). It is recommended to avoid direct approach because they may think of you as pushy and rude in negotiation. However, communication can be expedited and more direct once relationship has been built. In the automobile industry, specifically, negotiation is a large part of the business. Both dealing with customers and dealing with other businesses require great verbal communication skills for the business. When dealing with customers, it is important to manage what the salesperson say in order to leave a good impression. You may not want to go directly to recommend the cars to the customer, but to start the conversation with random chat like the weather, or hobbies and interests of customers. Getting trust through a combination of verbal and non-verbal communication is the first step in developing the relationship. Once it is developed, consistency of your communication should also be paid attention to so that the message of you and your customer could be communicated without misunderstanding and bias.

Spanish is the official language of the entire country. It is notably in Spain that 56% percent of the population do not know or speak a foreign language (Eurobarometer, 2006). While the majority of the country knows the basics of English, few of them speak English fluently (Fork, 2014). Similarly, Spain also does not have a large population that are familiar with French.

Ethnicity, culture and religion in Spain plays an important role forming and influencing their style of communication. Almost the entire population of Spain is Catholic, and most of the people living in Spain are ethnically Spanish (safaritheglobe). In such a country like Spain, which is more of a high-context culture as compared with Canada, and a relatively low-context culture as compared with Asian countries, it is important to determine the appropriate way of global cross-cultural communication. The ethnicity, religion, and culture integrates to impact how people communicates under the cultural setting. In some high-context cultures, personal bonds and informal agreements are a lot more binding than any formal contract (Goman, 2011). However, as compared with Canada, communication in Spain is not as direct and explicit.
