1. What fascinates me most, besides my academic work, is a diversity of sports items Columbia offers, which come as an exciting magnet for me. Sports stands as a usual path toward buoyant health. It is fair to say, Columbia is voluntarily tasked with boosting students’ physical development by allowing sports enjoyment. Amid a wave of sports items Columbia allows, I prefer golf and lacrosse that rarely can be seen in Chinese campus. I have never touched upon such sports in China, where sporting facilities are slightly below par compared to that in Canada. I tend to count myself among amateur athletes serving Columbia community, with joining in such “fresh” items I have never gone for. From my perspective, physical development stays as significant as academic progress. Arguably, my eagerness lies in the sporting things Columbia provides as an essential part of extra-curriculum life.

2. What I value most is a rainbow of major and minor options offered by Columbia. Such diverse options make us more likely to turn versatile talents as a way to cut down on the likelihood of partial academic performance. I do regard that multidisciplinary settings could do me a good turn for I have been wriggling out of partial learning since my primary school. However, my efforts have done little work. This could be traced to the educational policy in China that calls for students to opt for liberal arts or science in senior high. I dare say, such unseemly practice would box students in a limited horizon and then put a ceiling on their development. In my hometown, a majority of students have to exert themselves in what they have chosen as a fixed future. And they are inclined to go for the most profitable careers, which prompt them to opt for according learning fields. Even some are so bold to have a whack at what they have “put aside”, little time could be spent on their real hobbies as most time and efforts have been occupied by their majors. Nevertheless, colorful courses offered by Columbia could, to some degree, remedy such situation. And the setting of minors, a kind of complement to majors, is pitted against uneven academic performance. This comes as a good news for me as I desire to transform myself into a versatile talent. I prefer the major of economics out of my consideration about my future career, alongside with psychology or philosophy as my minors out of my fascination with them. In a word, the establishment of minors is what I pursue and value.

3. I was born into a merchant family that stays as a major environment nurturing my mental development. My father, the pillar of my whole family, is buried in business work, whose merchant aura always hovers over me and generates in me the sense of business. As such, such intangible but forcible influence inevitably prompts me to cast my mind in the field of business. I have been riveting my attention on changes happening in business circle since my childhood, and this could be owed to the deep, prolonged impact from my father. I have touched upon and occasionally delved into business reviews or comments with my father, a seasoned merchant who has gone through ups and downs in his career. My communication with him indeed broadens my horizon and helps me develop a business brain. My family background and growing experience have endowed me with a business eye. That explains why I hold thick interest in business circle. However, marketing is not really my trademark as I am an introvert who prefers solitude and quietness, and I in no way can be labeled as an eloquent marketer. I would rather indulge myself in data analysis and trend prediction with knowledge of economics, than force myself to become a sophisticated, slick merchant.

Besides, the major of economics has been heated in these days, as financial sector has turned a sought-after destination for waves of job hunters. I aspire to become an economist who sits in a quiet office, watches the computer screen and does analytical work. The career of economist, a relatively profitable and respectable job, can help me support myself with a sufficient income.

In conclusion, the economist work essentially conforms to both my background and aspiration. And that is why I rivet my eyes on the field of economics as my learning direction.

4. In the past year, most books I was immersed in were written by Song Hongbing, a renowned Chinese economist. He offers his deep insights in his books, including the series of Currency Wars. His books tell a story about financial giants and predict where the financial industry in China would go, as a rudimentary book for me to aim at economics major.

In addition, The Wealth of The Nations, a monumental book with far-reaching influence, also fazed me with Smith Adam’ s insightful opinions on macroeconomics. It built a rough profile of economics in my mind and enlightened me.

What shook me most is Capital written by Marx. This book tugs at the essence of capitalism and gives me pertinent opinions on it. I benefited a lot from it.

5. In my leisure time, I am inclined to read books that can relax my mind and thus put me in peace. The book I enjoyed most was Walden written by Thoreau, an American philosopher. His opinion that preaches “don’t do good things; but be good” tugs at my heartstrings.

Besides, Field of Life and Death written by Xiao Hong, a well-recognized talented woman writer in the early nineteenth century, amazed me. Her writing style enlightened me, prompting me to learn from hers. And I believe more reading would go a long way back toward my writing performance.

Additionally, The Yellow Storm written by Lao She fazed me as well. His writing vividly mirrors how the Chinese society was in the 19th century.

6. The website I browse everyday is “The Economist”, which puts together a wealth of news and information. This website tends to post economist data to worldwide browsers. Many articles listed on it tell us where economic landscape will go with plain and witty words. Therefore, I can acquire a rough understanding about economic architecture.

Besides, the website of BBC is also my favorite, which offers a network of updated news. It has improved my reading capability as well.

7. The film impressed me most is Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Although it appears sort of dramatic, it, to some extent, reflects how the Wall Street is, the top financial hub in the world. My incentive to watch this film could be traced to my deep-seated desire for an economist career in the Wall Street.

What’ s more, the film Inside Job is an exceptional work. It fully reflects how human natures tucked away in everyone, both bright and dark, bring out themselves under certain circumstances.

My binge-watch TV series is Sherlock, a three-episode crime drama based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle' s work. I was once so crazy about it that I wrote a couple of fan fictions.
