When it comes to the problem of drug use, all you guys may unconsciously produce a sense of fear and rejection, right? And I believe that many of you will feel that drug use should be completely banned for the sake of the health of the great majority of human beings in your first impression. But what I would like to say is that drug should not be completely banned. I know that it may be much to your surprise at this moment and I am going to tell you why I hold that drug should not be completely banned in my presentation from all these seven aspects.

The first aspect is that the necessity to ban all the other vices like alcohol and tobacco if drugs like heroin and cocaine should be completely banned. You can understand it in this way that all the other vices can kill people the same as drugs. So if drugs should be completely banned, the same case should as well go to all the other vices.

The second aspect is that the effect of humans’ psychological inversion has determined that the prohibition toward the drug use won’t take effect as expected. People tend to do what they are not allowed to do. Just take us students as an example, we are forbidden by both our parents and teachers not to do one thing or another, but there are still many of us that continue to do those things. Do you have the same feeling as me? Or have you thought of any situation in which you do something that you are not allowed to do?

The third aspect is that the complete ban on drug use will cost a large sum of money which can be seen as a great economic loss. As a matter of fact, the money spent on banning drug use can be used somewhere else for more significant issues, like improving the life standards of the wide public, guaranteeing the wellbeing and some other similar fields like that. And we can easily imagine that the economic loss caused will naturally block the development of the country more or less and it is not conducive toward the long-term development of the whole country.

The fourth aspect is that the complete ban on drug use calls for the participation of massively invasive police state. In our mind, police officers are supposed to manage public security for the entire society and they have nothing to do with the ban on drug use. At the same time, the employment of a large number of police officers will as well account for another part of expenses for the country to cover.

And then comes that the complete ban on drug use will pose great burden for the prisons to accommodate plenty of drug dealers and drug takers. Here I would like to take the America as an example and offer you the concrete statistics concerned. The United States is the specific country that is with the largest prison population all over the world and it only accounts for 5 percent of the world’s population while it takes up 25% of the world’s prisoners. From this distinct contrast, you can easily feel the burden for the America to accommodate a large number of prisoners.

What comes next is that the complete ban on drug use will lead to the creation of crimes. On the one hand, drug addicts will fight with one another in order to get the limited drugs being sold. Accordingly, drug black market will appear during the process of banning drugs, which criminal gangs control and profit from. On the other hand, the young kids that make a living by selling drugs may not be able to support themselves so that they have to resort to some illegal means to survive. These two parts will both result in the incidence of potential crimes.

The last one is that drug or alcohol use can help relieve work stress. We will more or less hear the complaints from our parents that the competition is fiercer and fiercer nowadays and they are under heavier and heavier pressure in today’s society. Under this situation, people may have no choice but to turn to drug or alcohol for help.
