Nowadays human beings have entered an “information society.” Encompassed by overloaded information, human beings seem more likely to be confused about information. In this essay, I will address my own experience to show how I select information, and elaborate the mechanism of our understanding of the world.

In the modern world, information is everywhere. Information will come to you naturally and try to grasp your attention. Every morning after I wake up, Twitter, Facebook and apps of the news media will push the latest new to me via mobile phone. I am immersed in an ocean of new information, but I will not absorb them randomly. I will select information according to their relevance to the public and my surroundings as well as their sources. For example, recently I will pay intensive attention to the explosion in Brussels, U.S election and the events of the university. This information shapes my knowledge about my surroundings and the world. When selecting the information, I will also pay attention to the sources and rhetoric of the information. For example, I will trust the sources with high-credibility such as the New York Times and favor information with more detailed data, balanced points of view and objective narrative. I hope with the help of diverse and reliable information, I can understand the world more objectively.

However, I may still be troubled and fail to know whether the information is true. The characteristic of information and rumor may all frame my understanding of the world. In terms of information itself, the effect of “facts backfire” may influence our access to truth. As Joe Keohane’s “How Facts Backfire” indicates, information that appears reliable may strengthen our biased understandings of world. In Keohane’s own word, “if we believe something about the world, we are more likely to passively accept as truth any information that confirms our beliefs, and actively dismiss information that doesn’t.” He points out that when relating to issues like education, health care reform and immigrations, people may be more likely to stick to their old ideas, and the seemingly-trusted information may only strengthen these ideas. For example, when people with worries about immigrants are exposed to serious news in the New York Times, he may still selectively focus on the fact that may prove his own theory and draw the conclusion that immigrants should be toughly restricted. Maybe that’s why Donald Trump may attract so many “informed citizens.”

In terms of rumor, it may also influence our understandings of the world. As Gary Alan Fine and Nicholas Difonzo analyze in “uncertain knowledge,” people select what they believe by basing on those who trust in the social network they belong to. When there are no secure and definite knowledge, people tend to be deceived by rumors, which may influence people’s thoughts and emotion. For example, when there is no clear evidence about whether immigrants influence our daily life, people may be likely to believe emotion-evoking rumor like “Muslim is planning bomb attack in this city,” which may reduce our uncertainty about them. However, our understanding of the world is distorted in this way.

In conclusion, I try to understand the world with more diverse and objective information, but information’s “backfiring effect” and rumor may still influence my knowledge about what is true.
