After watching the documentary "Exit Through the Gift Shop", I am very intrigued by the life of street artists. The documentary has presented the readers a panoramic view of street art. As a matter of fact, it never occurred to me that street artists are doing something illegal. I love the documentary for its realistic way of presenting the true life of street artists.

The scene of the street artists escaping from the police or how they communicate with the police after being arrested touches me most. I think the documentary has done a monumental work in peeling the situation of street art. Though Banksy has never clearly said anything about respecting or protecting street art, the public can't help think of the difficulty street art is facing. More and more people will think of making it legal after watching this documentary.

Many comment that it's so disappointed to find that Thierry Quetta becomes the real protagonist instead of Banksy himself. Many people were so eager to the life of Banksy and his true identity. However, I think Thierry can never take Banksy's thunder. Thierry can never achieve the big success of the exhibition without Banksy's help. It's Banksy who inspires encourages Thierry to pursue street art. Thierry can't make good films by endlessly shooting. Instead, he turns to street art. In some way, Banksy creates Mister Brainwash. Even if Thierry occupies most part of the documentary, I think it's a way for Banksy to tell the public that there is no need to reveal his identity and what the public should focus is his art and street art.

What Banksy says at the end of the documentary after Thierry's big success is really thought-provoking. He comments that maybe Thierry is gifted and maybe art is just a joke. He doesn't seem happy for Thierry's success while other artists are praising him. He also admits that it was him who encourages Thierry to go after art but he doesn't do now. It seems like he is implying something. He says that he doesn't do art for money. I think he is actually mocking those artists who make big money by commercializing their art. Maybe he is also criticizing the public for evaluating art by money. Like he says in the film, art can be anything. It's precious if it's recognized and it's nothing if no one appreciates it. So it's not proper to evaluate art works by their price. What the public should do is letting the artists focus on their creation rather than prying the artists' personal life.

As I love the way the documentary presents the reality of street arts, I don't enjoy much of the film's structure. The former part of the documentary has very compact plot from Thierry's addiction to shooting to his love of graffiti. But when it comes to Thierry's preparation for his big exhibition in Los Angeles, it's all about the details of the exhibition. I think the details are too many. I can't decide whether it's to show Thierry's enthusiasm in street art or the pressure a street artist is facing. I can't tell whether he is doing it for art or for money. As an audience, I haven't got much entertainment by watching this part. But I guess Banksy may be telling us something deeper by filming it this way.
