Canada is known to be one of the most prosperous industrial countries in the modern society. However, according to the statistics from the Economic Cooperation Organization, Canada also belongs to one of the countries with the most obviously increasing income gaps among different social class members in the last twenty years, whose income gap growth rate is just second to the United States. This paper is going to analyze the social stratification phenomenon in Canada through the example of Winnipeg Harvest.
Being known to the public as one of the most influential non profit organizations, Winnipeg Harvest serves the Canadians by collecting and distributing food to those who are in need. They also play an important role in providing available opportunities for people to improve themselves through a series of training and learning programs. In general, the volunteers in this organization are focusing on two aspects, one is to manage the distribution of food and the other is to operate necessary programs. Through the operation of Winnipeg Harvest, it can be seen how social stratification affects the Canadians in reality.

Canadian government used to take a series of measures to curb the income inequality before the 1990s in the twentieth century. However, this was less effecting in stopping the social stratification. Nowadays, the government is no long trying to change this situation, as only an extremely limited proportion of the rich are dominating the majority of the possession in society. To be specific, the upper class occupies merely about 5 percent of the Canadian population, while they possess 67.4 percent of all the wealth in Canada, with the income of at least $125 000 (Macionis, Jansson, Benoit&Burkowicz, 2006).Following this tendency, the transition of the employment trends is also one of the factors leading to the increasing inequality in social stratification. People used to be able to have a joy which is full time and stable. However, this kind of position is becoming rarer and rarer, with higher and higher admission requirements. For the Canadian employments, they are usually required to be bilingual or master three kinds of languages. More importantly, the educational degree is strictly required with less and less job vacancies. Even under this situation, the employees are widely lowly paid. Therefore, many Canadians find it more than difficult to become rich. In contrast with the upper class, the lower class is about 20 percent of the Canadian population. They even feel insecure and difficult in making a living (Macionis, Jansson, Benoit&Burkowicz,2006).Winnipeg Harvest provides necessary food for families to support their basic life. For those who need to find a job, the training programs can be useful. Nevertheless, even with the constant efforts of these non-profits organizations in Canada, the social stratification of Canada has come to a rather severe extent.
Influenced by obvious social stratification, many Canadians are seriously in their daily lives. As has been stated, being employed is becoming more and more competitive, leading to the increasing unemployment. To make matters worse, the children from the lower-class may fail to finish their education, with only about 15 percent who are able to complete a university degree (Macionis, Jansson, Benoit&Burkowicz, 2006).. The casual effects between educational degree and the employment opportunity then accelerate the unemployment and social stratification in return. In the meanwhile, the health gap has been widened as the poor has a higher rate of smoking. As a result, different factors contribute to the increasing social stratification in Canada, with serious social effects. Thus, the social stratification needs to be valued with proper solutions.
