Among them all, obesity is the most direct result of eating too much added sugar. Therefore, a lot of added sugar in our diet will cause many health issues.
One of the most important causes of obesity is too much added sugar in our daily diet. A certain amount of sugar is needed by our bodies. As Flynn (2014:74) points out, carbohydrates, lactose, and fructose are the source of energy for our bodies. Thus, it is not necessary to stop sugar consumption once and for all. Only the amount of added sugars in our food should be watched out. A large amount of added sugar is consumed by us everyday. According to USDA, “American consumes 3 pounds of sugar each week” (Flynn 2014:74). Studies also show that, on an average, teenagers “nosh 28.3 teaspoons of added sugar a day”(Flynn 2014:75).This huge amount of sugar in our bodies is dangerous for our health. It stuffs our bodies with extra sugars we do not actually need. Then, these added sugars will later turn to fat, which causes weight gain. It is the main cause of obesity, and many other problems. For example, diabetes is often found among overweight people.
Sugar can also be addictive when eaten too much. Added sugar affects our brain chemistry. According to studies, “eating sugar affects the same parts of the brain as addictive drugs” (Lloyd 2014:19). We will always want more sugar when we have this sugar addiction. It is important to notice how much sugar we take, and keep the amount under control. The undigested sugar has the same effect on our bodies as alcohol. According to Lloyd (2014:19), the extra fructose will stay in our livers as fat, which happens to be the same process of how alcohol stays in an alcoholic’s body. Thus, as alcohol can be addictive, sugar can be, too. It is easy to pick up this sugar addiction, but hard to get rid of it, like any other addiction.
In conclusion, the large amount of sugar we consume is dangerous for our health. Although, an amount of sugar is needed for our bodies. Extra added sugars can lead to obesity, which will cause other more serious problems. Sugar can also be addictive when we eat too much of it. It process in our body like other addictive things, such as drugs and alcohol, do. Therefore, to notice the sugar amount we eat daily is important for our health.
