“Empire” is associated with political units, economic strength and military might. As a form of state, “empire” always exists in the history; as a way of rule, “empire” is changing with the reality(Jane and Frederick, Empires in world history, 11). Many theories are evolved within the development of empires, such as imperialism, colonialism and post-colonialism. Indeed empires have a sense of superiority and want others to use their languages, recognize their political systems and cultures. Then they can be the masters and others become their slaves. From Rome and Great Britain to the 21st century, empires do not regard them as empires. However, they pursue their own interests under the different name, such as freedom, democracy and so on. Throughout the history of empires, the economic power, might military and cultures force make a great difference in the development of the empires. In the 18th century, the Great Britain started its reform and led the Industrial Revolution. Because of the shortage of customers’ demands and the excessive supply of goods, the Great Britain wanted to dominate the world market so that it can dump its goods and make great profits. Therefore, the Great Britain took advantages of its naval power to safeguard British interests and establish the British colonies in the world. In addition, the religious principles also influence the changing of the empires and even provoke conflicts( Jane and Frederick, Empires in world history,15).In the 19th century, many European missionaries entered into China with the intention of controlling Chinese minds and providing a moral foundation for empires.

What’s more, we can not ignore the two methods of the empires: incorporation and differentiation. To live longer, empires change their strategies and adopt rational policies for new circumstances. Through mix, marriage, education, propaganda as well as transformation, Empires expand their scales and spread their cultures. For example, Ottoman Empires change its policies to reduce the difference and increase the connection between Ottomans and sultans by using the way that the boys of the Ottoman Empires were brought up in the sultan’s families. Meanwhile, unlike “colonies” in Roman or Ottomans Empire, new empires, such as the Great Britain, use the way named “plantations” by supporting the persons from conquered countries to consolidate the governing of empires ( (Jane and Frederick, Empires in world history, 13-14).As a coin has two sides, empires also give different effects to the world history. The development of empires always accompanies with war, conflicts as well as blood. As empires continue their destructive competition, many developing countries are involved in the zero-gum game. But in some degree, we should admit the fact that the birth of empires is a historical trend and learning of the history of empires and it also can provide a new view to think about world history and even the world future.
