Many students are facing different degrees of stress, especially college students. Nearly every student would feel stressful and it becomes a serious mental health issue among students. Stress would damages the happiness of every individual if it not properly dealt with. This essay will discuss how academic demands, poor time management skill and unknown burden after graduation cause the stress among college students. The essay will also discuss how seeking professional help can contribute to ease the stress.
Academic demand is one of the biggest factors for university students’ stress. According to a report investigated by Melissa Cohen (2015), “80% of college students say they sometimes or often feel stressed” (Cohen, 2015). She writes that “academic demands and test anxiety may be the most common long-term cause of stress for college students. After all, that’s why students go to college – to learn” (Cohen, 2015). Unlike elementary or high school students, college students are required to do independent academic research. They cannot depend on teachers any more. Academic performance directly influences the students’ mood. Some students may think that certain pressure can encourage them to get more wonderful academic performance. However most consider pressure makes them feel tired and depressed so that they don’t have a good mood to achieve good academic performance.
The next big cause for the stress among college students is that they are poor at time management. According to “about education”(2015), time management is critical for college students because “With so much to do and keep track of, strong time management skills can make all the difference”(about education, 2015). Many students don’t know what to do when they first enter university and many of them are at lost with the loads of courses. Besides study tasks, they also have many extra-curriculum activities such as various clubs and they also want to hang out in the bars or other places with their friends because they are adults. Many students also have to do part-time jobs. So time is never enough. When they cannot finish their tasks properly, the stress will naturally come.

The last major cause is unknown social burden after graduation. As written by Cohen(2015), students cannot decide their after-graduation plan because there are many stressors which can affect the plan, “Ultimately, the fear of the unknown can really make a huge difference in how much stress you feel about your post-graduate life” (Cohen, 2015). Graduation means a lot to students. It means they have to stand on their own feet and take most if not complete responsibility because graduation means an independent adult.
The most effective solution to all the above-mentioned stress is seeking professional help. According to Gregg Henriques(2015), if university students with mental health issue don’t use psychological services, some of them may have emotional and behavioral problems, which would affect many other people on the campus with dangerous behavior, including roommates, classmates, and other staff. Nearly every university offer free counseling services. Many students are afraid of being judged by their friends or classmates, so they choose to deal with their stress alone. It is nothing serious at first but with the problems piling up, they are likely to have a mental breakdown. When students feel stressful, they should avoid their shyness and go to seek for help. Professionals such as counselors, therapists or social workers can give professional and effective suggestions based on the different situations of the students.
To sum up, academic demands, poor time management skill and unknown post-graduation burden are the three most important reasons for the stress among university students. To solve the problem, the best way is to turn to professionals because professionals can offer good advices according to the various problems.
