The movie Gladiator tells a story about fight, fight for the empire, fight for the people and fight for oneself. The protagonist, Maximus, is a valorous and loyal general in Rome who has won thousands of battles. At the beginning of the movie, Maximus is fighting in the battlefield with his troops. After the victory of this battle, the Caesar intends to make Maximus his successor, a man with wisdom, justice, fortitude and forbearance and deserves to be respected and honored. However, when the young prince Commodus learns his father’s decision, he is irritated and secretly strangles his father to death. What’s more, regarding Maximus his enemy, the new emperor not only orders to execute Maximus, but crucify and burn Maximus’s wife and son without mercy. Though Maximus successfully escapes from Commodus’s murder, he is captured as a slave and becomes a gladiator in a small town of Rome. Initially dispirited and hopeless, Maximus then determines to revenge his family and save people of Rome from tyranny. Contrarily, Commodus does nothing for the empire but see Rome as his own after his coronation. He even arrest scholars and other learned men to feed the arena in order to entertain the “mob” of Rome. Because of Maximus’s outstanding performance as a gladiator, he is sent to fight in the grand arena. His magnificent skill wins both people’s heart and the attention of the new Caesar. Commodus makes all efforts to kill Maximus since he knows his real face. In the end, Maximus kills Commodus and he himself also dies due to serious injury. Nevertheless, Maximus is always honored by Roman people while Commodus is left alone in the empty arena. Except for the two male characters, Commodus’s sister, princess of Rome is also one of the main characters. Originally connives with her brother, Lucilla finally is stung by her conscience and moved by Maximus, presenting as a positive figure at the end of the movie.
There is no doubt that the great general and the valorous gladiator Maximus is the hero. He is qualified to be called a hero in three respects. Firstly, he is heroic in battlefield and in arena. On the one hand, it is referred in the movie that he has won thousands of battle during his service for Caesar. He is a man with valor and always fight for the glory of Rome. On the other hand, he fears nothing in the arena. No matter Commodus thinking of any difficult ways to challenge him in the arena, he waves his sword and defeats all his foes. Secondly, Maximus is a hero in that he has the talent of leadership. In the battlefield, a simple sentence of “stay with me” can give the troop enormous confidence and sense of security. He encourages the soldiers and says “what we do in life echoes in eternity”. Following his order, the whole troop unites as one and destroys enemy with the cry of “Roma victor”. Similarly, he manages to lead his gladiator fellows in conquering Commodus in the grand arena. Thirdly, Maximus is a hero in terms that he is a man with great love. After the cruel war of near 20 days, he feels upset because a large number of his soldiers are injured or dead. He spends most of the time in caring for and consoling them. Besides, Maximus loves his country and his people. He thinks his fight is glorious since it is a kind of protection of those things he loves. It is clear for him that war is for eventual peace and then everyone can go home. Taking all these factors into consideration, Maximus is unquestionably the hero in Gladiator.

As for the values and goals Maximus lives by, there are many things to say, while most of them are positive and good. From my point of view, the most important value of Maximus is love. No matter it is his love for the family, or his love for the country and people, both are so moving that Maximus’s image shines over all the other characters. Though most of his time is spent on the battlefield, Maximus is never assimilated by the cruelty and brutality of war and death. Leaving home for more than 2 years, he misses his family so much and the first thing he wants to do after war is to go home. When he sees his wife and son’s death, he is so heartbroken and helpless that his mere wish is to go together with them. Even be slaved as a gladiator, he never forget to pray to his family. At the end of his life, what emerges in his mind is the happy faces of his wife and son. Finally he can go to love them in another world. At the same time, as a general of Rome, Maximus has the larger responsibility to guard the whole empire. It is rightly because of his love for his country and people that he is willing to sacrifice his life for their peace. That is also the reason why he is deeply honored by the people. Correspondingly, Maximus has two goals: one is to go home, the other is the country can be a dreamland and the people he loves can lead a peaceful life.
In the beginning, when the old Caesar realizes that his death is just around the corner, he calls Maximus to his bed, hoping Maximus could achieve his unfinished wish; that is, give the power to the people, end the corruption of politics and let Rome be a republic again. Maximus bears these words in his mind and tries his best to keep the promise. At the end of the story, Commodus dies, which hopefully signifies a bright future of Rome. This is what Maximus’s death brings about and also the evidence of his promise.
In the later part of the movie, when Maximus’s proponents want to buy his freedom from the slave owner Proximo, Proximo disagrees for he treats Maximus as his machine of earning money. Then Maximus promises that he would come back after meeting his troop. After the persuasion of princess Lucilla and thanks to the general’s good fame, Proximo finally help Maximus escape and stand by him.
Besides, Lucilla is always worrying about what her son would be when the little boy becomes the heir of Commodus. Maximus, the man of fortitude and justice, promises Lucilla that her son would get no harm from Commodus. At the moment of his death, Maximus reassures Lucilla her son’s safety and happiness. In a word, Maximus is such a great man whonever eat his words and always ready to fulfill the promises he makes at the cost of his life.
Though Maximus has noble values, goals and promises, life is not only made up of surprises, but also pities. Most of the time, Maximus does not have the chance to achieve these things. Despite the fact that he hurries to home after escaping the execution, what wait for him are just the burnt corpses of his wife and son. His love of his family, his goal and promise of returning home after the war is shattered into pieces. Moreover, Maximus dies together with Commodus. Though his goal of revenging his family is achieved, there is no time left for him to fulfill the old Caesar’s wish of “give the power to the people, end the corruption of politics and let Rome be a republic again”, one of his most significant promises in the movie. We are willing to believe Rome would be a better country after the death of a tyrant. As an ordinary audience, I hope to witness Maximus’s family reunion. I expect more to see a peaceful Rome and in which way would the empire develops under Maximus’s rule. However, the ending part is not what I wished. Maybe here lies exactly the solemn and stirring beauty of the movie, of the hero. Considering from this perspective, I’d rather believe Maximus’s values are basically fulfilled and goals and promises satisfied. Such an ending makes his life and deeds more heroic and honorable.
