The United States of America has been the world’s most famous nation where people from a variety of races as well as totally different social backgrounds can gather together and become a group of citizens.

The majority of people are in face proud of the nation because it is a tolerant place where a person can blend in and can be accepted no matter where he comes from. People do not have to worry about their root. That is the reason why the United States of America has been known as the melting pot. There are several types of racial groups living in America in the recent decades. The largest groups are the Asian Americans, Latinos, the Anglo Saxons as well as the people from Islam and Muslim. (Bilici, 2012)

According to the statistics, the authority reported that about eight percent of the population is the Muslims. Therefore, it means that more than two point five million of people belong to the Muslim religion but this estimation is not entirely correct due to the fact that many of them are actually illegal and they had not registered in the government authority.

As the United States of America is an open nation, it started accepting people from the Muslim culture. This act in fact is dated back to more than hundreds of years ago because at that time, some Muslims were on the ships from the Columbus so the first group of Muslim is actually from before the 16th century as the first group of them arrived in Africa in the 17th century as the slaves. So the immigration started from many years ago. (Bilici, 2012)

It is said that the Islam is one of the fastest growing religions in the world and in America because according to the research from about several years ago, more than around 1.25 billion of people were actually from the Muslim population. This is a huge number because it means that around twenty percent of the world’s population is from the Muslim culture.

However, the subject of Muslim and Islam culture is worth studying because it is important to understand how the people from an entirely different social background live or how it is possible for them to blend in the new society. In fact, recently, topics about Muslims in America are being heatedly debated because of the recently controversial presidential elections and debates.

According to the CCN news report, one of the most popular candidates Donald Trump has made numerous speeches about the Muslims and how the Americans should make policies on these people. According to him, it is necessary to call for “a ban on Muslims coming in the United States”. Some of the opponents argue and claim that his decision is in fact against the important and essential idea of the nation itself: the freedom of religion.

Obviously, the Muslim groups are seriously looked down upon in America because they are thought to be the terrorists or the people who commit suicide bombs to damage the public. As one of the supporters of the presidential candidate Donald Trump has said, “We should disallow any Muslims from coming in, any of them because we are not able to identify what their attitude is.” Apparently, it is the direct discrimination of them.

It is apparent that among the white people, they have a common misconception of the Muslim race as well as the Muslim culture. The majority of the Anglo Saxon in the nation tends to suspect and they are taught to believe that those from the Saudi nations are the terrorists. However, it should be noted that most of the Muslims and people from Islam living in the United States of America are in fact like other everyday Americans or Europeans.(Bilici, 2012) It is not fair to look down upon them because of their birth.

To understand the culture and attitude of Arab-American and Islam better, a few researches have been conducted. Firstly, I made an interview in a quite suburb of Detroit because in this place, there are more than forty thousands of Arab Americans. From the first sight of the houses and decorations, it is obvious to tell that many of the Arab America families have already been settling down in this quiet suburb for more than three or four generations.

Also, some other young Arab immigrants have just arrived, coming from nations such as Syria and Iraq. First, I asked a man named Abdulilah in the neighborhood. According to him, he has been living in America with his entire family for more than a decade.

I assume that the polite question should be started to be relevant to his daily habits so that it would not sound to offending. I asked him why he would not go to the western restaurants but also eat in an Arabic restaurant. He told me that it is because the meat in the Arabic restaurants is “clean”.

Usually, before they killed an animal, they do not kill them with electricity like those people in the western restaurants would do. On the contrary, they would slit the throat until the blood runs out so that they could first pray for the blessing and also the blood will not stay in the meat and it is an act of honoring the god.

From what he talks about and his words, it is obvious that he behaves like an ordinary people who have a normal life and a family like the rest of the Americans. Later on, I tried to bold and ask him why he would let his wife cover all over her body on the street and not let her present the best of her in front of others. In the past, I thought because women did not have rights.

I wondered if it is because of the male dominating attitudes. However, at this time, his wife came forward and correct me by saying that she did this willingly because she believes only by covering her entire body on the street can she feel comfortable.

The Arab American Abdulilahstated clearly that he thinks it is important for his culture to protect women so his wife should cover her body and her face because she is “precious” to him. From this conversation, it is obvious to tell that people from the Muslim culture respect women well and it is the western ideas of misconceptions that led us to think that Muslim women had to do that due to the male dominated culture and father leading culture. Apparently, these people feel they need to do it for protection.

The next person I interviewed is the man called Igor sitting at the table of McDonalds, watching the show All American Muslim,It looked like he had finished a trip from another nation because he carried a load of luggage and a lot of big bags next to the desk.

After I approached him, I have learnt that he just finished his business trips in the Sound and Light Fair in Guang Zhou, China. I asked him how he felt about the trip to China and he told me that it was shocking that Chinese businessmen would let ladies wear such revealing clothes standing in the crowd to show off her body.

I tried to test his attitude and he answered my question in a straight manner just like millions of other Muslims, “I think it is a very cheap way to attract the customers because women should be protected and respected, not being shown off like a product.” This is a shocking answer for me because it is not what I thought.

In fact, his answer can represent the false assumptions that white Americans have on the Muslim as the majority of us are convinced that the Muslims are manipulative and they like to commit domestic violence because women “do not have a choice”. However, for his culture, women do have a choice and they should not be bullied or got into the professions which require heavy lifting or shameful acts like prostitutes or revealing models. From this aspect, people from Arab culture and Islam can be more open minded than the white Americans because they realize that women are more precious and they need special care.

The third interview that I have conducted is on the metro to an Islam man lying down on the ground. I asked why he has to stay on the train and whether I need to offer him food or places to stay.

However, he rejected me politely by saying that he could have just lived on the train because he wants to save more money. In fact, according to him, when he first arrived in America, in order to save more money, he had to live on the train before he was able to get a job. From this experience, it is obvious that people from Islam and Arab background are well mannered as they also like to greet one another on the street even though they are strangers and don’t know each other. (Madani, 1993) This behavior is the opposite of Western culture.

Nonetheless, a majority of Americans still regard Muslims in America “terrorists”, “devils” and some other mean words. (Hefner, 2010) It can be said for sure that Americans, especially white Americans are biased when it comes to the topic Muslim. Last year, a girl posted on her social account saying that she met a Muslim woman crying on the train that she was also on. When she approached her and inquired her reasons for her cry, the woman responded that she did not want to be a terrorist in people’s eyes.

She was a just a woman trying to have a life in America, which was so unrealistic for her as a Muslim woman since all the hate crimes and assaults she received every day.

This post received hundreds of views and comments in a short time. Most of the views were about people’s reflecting on their way of behaving when they encountered people who resembled Muslims in their eyes.

People commented that Muslims should be treated and have the rights to be treated equally as people should cut some slicks on them. Even though this post and the touching story in it was proved to be made up and the blogger was under fire because of this made-up post, this incident can still be a profile showing that Americans can make some correction to their perceptions of stereotypical Muslim figure. (Hefner, 2010)

This is quite hard to achieve after the horrifying 911. After that tragic incident, days have been hard for Muslims in America. They are called bad names and yelled at in the streets, they are not accepted by the main stream of people who usually connect them with the title terrorists. A few days ago, two Muslim women were escorted out of a plane because they were accused of using cellphones to record videos in the plane and “staring at the flight attendants for too long”. Some might say that they deserved it, since the procedures to maintain security in American airline has come to a point of being critical. (Madani, 1993)

Yet, this is a side point of how biased people are when it comes to Muslim. When they see women in hijab or men with heavy beard on their faces, they become vigilant and alert, fearing that they might be the victims of another attack. It is understandable after the 9/11 attack.

In case like this, both parties are the victims. Just as not all Americans are perfect and flawless, not all Muslims are terrifying terrorists. They should be treated as equal individuals who have their own life and work just as everyone else. They are not judged by the religion that they choose or by the outfits or looks that they put on, they deserve to be treated as other normal US citizens, not be hostile against. (Hefner, 2010)

The situation is fiercer for Muslim immigrants. The number of hate crimes against Muslims is undergoing a surge. Part of the reason is due to the enlarging number of immigrants in the country.

As more and more Muslims gather in America, they form different kinds of communities to help and support each other. They try to become more active in politics so as to win a saying for their community yet the society reacts differently towards this action.

Things are not smooth for Muslims born in America either. As known, Muslims eat different food from ordinary people, which means that if they are to have lunch at school, they are not to sit with other students due to their religious belief. Moreover, they request to have their own cafeterias to keep themselves from being tainted by the filthy food. This requirement further alienates Muslims from people who have already considered Muslims outsiders. But it is in fact not fair at all because not all of them are terrorists. (Bilici, 2012)

To make matters worse, there were a group of pictures about several disfigured women spread all over the internet previously. These women, who disobeyed their fathers’ will of marrying some men or fought back their husbands who maltreated her brutally, become disfigured because of their husbands or fathers or some other male relatives in their families.

Some of them were burnt by fire, some were by vitriolic acid. The rest of their life is ruined completely even with the help of social workers and people who are willing to speak for them and fight for them. Women are the weak and vulnerable part in the Muslim culture, no matter how the Koran says about respecting women.
