The Great Gatsby, a critique of the American Dream during the roaring 1920s as the economy soared, is one of the most eminent works composed by Francis Scott Fitzgerald. And it is also this novel that enables the author Fitzgerald to be recognized as one of the twentieth century’s greatest American writers, from which we can easily get that this novel is really one that calls for our attention. The “great” in the title “The Great Gatsby” will naturally lead us readers to wonder whether Gatsby is great or not and why Gatsby is great if he is and why he is not if he is not great. Whenever it comes to the idea that Gatsby is not great because of the illegal way he uses in order to be rich, others will oppose this opinion that Gatsby is definitely great. As far as I am concerned, there is no doubt that the latter opinion that Gatsby is definitely great does make sense, which will be elaborated on in the below via his being able to make a fortune with a poor background, his self-discipline to keep a simple life and his unsophisticated morality as well as his self-sacrifice for Daisy.

Firstly, the Gatsby’s greatness lies in that he can make a fortune without taking any regard of his poor background. Though Jay Gatsby went through an impoverished childhood, he finally made a young and mysterious millionaire out of himself through his own consistent struggle and extraordinary optimism in achieving that lofty goal (Li Qin and Zheng Lili. 2015). To put it more specifically, Gatsby belongs to the kind of person as can make the determination to work as hard as possible in order to approach success so that he can later become rich as a matter of fact. In the opposite, if he does not make efforts, then he has no choice but to continue his life as a poor man and it is completely impossible for him to win back Daisy’s love. And during the process of his becoming rich, he always keeps going and never gives up no matter how hard it may be, which allows him to undergo all the struggles along the way. As a result, he realizes his dream of becoming rich on the one hand and promoting his status in the society on the other hand.

Maybe some people will argue that Gatsby has actually used some illegal ways to make a fortune so that he should not be accepted as a great man. But it is added that the times when Gatsby lived in is the Jazz Age and people at that time would as well become successful in the same way as Gatsby (Li Qin and Zheng Lili. 2015). That is to say, the reason why Gatsby will choose to run counter to the laws during the process of making a fortune is that he is forced by the situation at that time. In this sense, Gatsby should still be considered as great even if the means he takes in order to become successful is somewhat controversial. Moreover, Li Qin and Zheng Lili have expressed their evaluation toward Gatsby that “he was firm, indomitable, brave and adamant” (Li Qin and Zheng Lili. 2015), from which it can be easily predicted that Gatsby’s success mainly results from his ideas and his sufficient courage.

Secondly, Gatsby’s greatness results from his self-discipline to keep a simple life and his unsophisticated morality (Exploring Novels. 2013). Gatsby can still insist on keeping a simple life after his becoming rich and he does not fall into the bad habit of drinking. “His bedroom was the simplest room of all—except where the dresser was garnished with a toilet set of pure dull gold” (98), which indicates the differences between Gatsby and other rich men in the society. At the same time, the difference between Gatsby and other rich men can also be revealed by the fact that Gatsby can still keep sober and self-disciplinary while those guests in his parties are all drunk. It can be claimed that Gatsby’s behavior of keeping mind awake and abstinence of wine can well embody his spirit of self-discipline (Exploring Novels. 2013). Also, his getting away from all the other women in that his only love is Daisy can as well indicate his spirit of self-discipline. Mr. Wolfshiem expresses that “Gatsby’s very careful about women. He would never so much as look at a friend’s wife” (78), which as well presents his self-discipline in personal affairs.

The fact that Gatsby is completely loyal to his friend Nick and his love Daisy can show his unsophisticated morality (Exploring Novels. 2013). What is unexpected is that he is willing to take the responsibility for the car accident for Daisy even if it is a life-death matter. Gatsby has a pure dream to love Daisy so that he will spare no efforts to protect her and love her. His dream and heart are so pure that he does not think much about Daisy’s having changed to be a shallow girl from the upper class and deep down his heart he still holds that Daisy is the representation of beauty, nobility and purity. Thus he won’t be regretful even if he has to pay the cost of his own life for taking the responsibility for the car accident for Daisy. Based on this, Gatsby is definitely great in that he has actually done something great that may not be completed by the great majority of other rich men, like Daisy’s husband Tom.

Last but not the least, Gatsby’s greatness is the result of the comparison of his self-sacrifice and others’ indifference (EssayMania.com. 2016). Take the behavior of Gatsby and Tom facing the car accident as an example. Both these two men know that Daisy is the one that has made the car accident happen and they both love Daisy, but their actions are distinct. For one part, Gatsby thinks much about Daisy, and he would like to shoulder the responsibility for her immediately. Therefore, he does not flee when Nick asks him to escape from the mess. For another, Tom loves himself the most and his first response when the accident occurs is to revenge Gatsby and run away with Daisy. Or maybe it can be put in another way that Tom is selfish and indifferent in nature so that though he loves Daisy, he does not have the intention to sacrifice himself for Daisy even for a moment. Besides, other people’s indifference can not only be embodied via the example of Tom, Daisy is another powerful example in that she has not appeared in the funeral of Gatsby even though Gatsby has lost his life for her. What is worse, she even feels no sadness toward the death of Gatsby and she has not realized the severity of killing a person in the car accident.

To sum up, Gatsby is undoubtedly great out of his misguided romantic idealism and his ability to dream and then his strong determination to spare no efforts to convert his dream into reality in the end. It cannot be denied that Gatsby has really violated the law during the process of realizing his dream, but it can still be understood because he is in the times of the Jazz Age. There is no doubt that Gatsby has been great in other aspects as well that have not been stated in the above, which calls for further research.
