Nowadays, there are many antiheroes on the screen and contrary to what most people thought, they are actually very popular. According to the McMillan Dictionary Online, an antihero is “a main character in a story who does not have the qualities that a hero usually has, such as being morally good” (McMillan, 2016). Sherlock Holmes, a crime drama television series co-produced between the Britain network BBC and the American station WGBH, is based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Sherlock Holmes is definitely not the first fictional detective, but he is one of the most well-known which considered to be a British cultural icon. Unlike the novel, the story of the television series happened in modern times instead of in the 1880s. The adventures of the famous detective is written into different stories by Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. The main characters and some of Sherlock’s personalities such as intelligence are kept from the original story (Conan Doyle, 1887). Sherlock and Watson always worked together to solve mysterious and dangerous criminal case. However, modern technology such as mobile phones, laptops and electronic lock, is used frequently to solve different cases. He is still incisive, intelligent but not kind and patient to his clients anymore. In the TV series, Sherlock became selfish, self-conceited, loves to show-off, and considered only cases that he is interested in. He is so proud of himself for being a genius. Although that the Sherlock in the TV series is so different from the character in the books and that his personalities indicated that he is an antihero, the American audience still loved the Sherlock on TV. This paper will first analyze which characteristics proved that he is an antihero and will then find out the reasons for why the audience love antiheros.

Sherlock is definitely a genius, but also a psychopath. He created his own memory palace. He is proud of the large amount of information that his brain can store. Even the tiniest detail may lead him to see the truth of a particular case. His common sense helped the police to solve the all kinds of murders and proved that the murderer is culpable. Sherlock is crazy about his work and have said “all that matter to me is the work! Without that, my brain nuts” in the TV series (Gatiss, 2010). The more unimaginable the case is, the more excitement he gets. He did not care about the number of people died and he did not even care about his own safety. The truth and adventure is all he wants and desires. Usually we would think that heroes are the ones who saved people’s lives. So Sherlock, someone who did not care about lives at all, is an antihero.

People called Sherlock a “freak” and those who knew him personally would tell the others to keep far away from him. Just by one glance, he is able to tell where the people comes from and what they did last night. He enjoyed to show off his observation by dissecting the situation without caring about others’ feelings. His words are used as weapons to hurt anyone who is around. He persistently calls himself as a “consulting detective” but he only accepts cases he is interested. Serial murders are defined as games and Sherlock himself is completely enjoying this game. Though some poor innocent people may be put at risks, Sherlock is still addicted to the “game”. For example, in one of the scenes, the murdered threatened Sherlock by putting on bombs on the hostages’ bodies. However, Sherlock did not care about the bombs at all and still focused on solving his problem. His talent gave him the ability to be proud and feel that he is above all the other people in the society. He does not even regard himself as a hero because he has said, “Don’t make people into heroes, John. Heroes don’t exist, and if they did, I wouldn’t be one of them” (Gatiss, 2010). Sherlock seemed to be clear about his own orientation, but he believes in himself so much.

Sherlock also liked to show-off at the expense of destroying other people’s plans. For example, once he tried to attract a mysterious yet pretty woman and gave her some important information just to show off his intelligence. Based on a single fragment of one email provided by Irene, Sherlock inferred the flight number, the departure time and the location of the flight in less than five seconds.However, it turned out that Irene is actually a spy for terrorists and she sent those information immediately to the leader of British terrorists. The terrorists, thanks to the information deciphered by Sherlock, was prepared for the government’s attack and the government failed to destroy the terrorists. Although Sherlock did not intent to help the terrorists, his carelessness and will to show-off indirectly caused the failure of the government and the success of the terrorists. Sherlock is an antihero because he makes mistake which caused danger to the society instead of saving the society.

Sherlock is selfish and overconfident. He is so confident of his own talent and he never admits his own mistakes. Waston first pointed out this in his blog, “Sherlock sees through everything and everyone in seconds. What is incredible, though, is how spectacularly ignorant he is about something” (Gatiss, 2010). Sherlock has less knowledge on galaxy but he classify this kind of knowledge as useless. However, in a latter scene, he did need this knowledge to solve the case. Had he knew this knowledge, he could have solve the case faster. When Mycroft point out that he is naive and carelessness, he said nothing although he knew he was wrong. When Waston found the mistakes Sherlock made, he denied it completely. Sherlock almost never accepted others advices expect while he is solving cases. He is arrogant and does not believe anyone else. This makes him an antihero because people need to listen to others in order to be welcomed by the whole society. Sherlock lives the way according solely to his own will and he does not care about others opinion.

There are several reasons why the American audience loves antiheros nowadays. The most popular view held by most media is that the current situation in the society has changed and people’s criteria of hero changed. According to Al Moloney and his news, he interviewed some audience on why they like antiheros. One of the audiences responded “We understand how conditions today don't allow us to remain clean, and that it's just a matter of how dirty we're willing to get in pursuit of what we've always been told we should want” (Moloney, 2014). Jonathan Michael have also stated that “Characters who shine as morally pure and upright don’t ring true to us anymore, because it’s not who we see around us in the world. Neither is it what we see when we look in the mirror” (Michael, 2013). People nowadays wanted to see some main characters with a little flaw in their personalities because the audience are tired of watching heroes who are perfect. These perfect people are apparently not realistic in real life and they are far away from the reality. When people watch TV, they liked to see a mirror of the modern society and of themselves. “It might be because their moral complexity more closely mirrors our own,” said Eric Bender, M.D. (Bender, 2013). So from a psychological view, what is more important than being perfect, is the how close the main character is to the vast audience. On top of being able to solve cases, some flaws made Sherlock more like a real instead of made-up person.

However, although I acknowledge that this is indeed a reason for why people like antiheroes, I believe that there is a more important reasons why the audience love Sherlock in the TV. He is gradually changing his attitude and his image is shifted from a genius to a more common individual. It is exactly this kind of change that attracted the audiences. He saves his friend, Dr. Waston, from dangerous situation. When Dr. Waston’s marriage is walking to the end, Sherlock stands up to as a scapegoat and avoid Waston’s wife jail time. As Waston wrote in his blog, “what’s incredible, though is how spectacularly ignorant he is about some things” (Gatiss, 2010). Caring is not an advantage to Sherlock, but he is learning to care about others and their feelings. The life in Baker Street adds some milk of human kindness on him. No one is perfect, but the way they are trying and learning to be perfect impressed and attracted people.

Even though Gatiss and Moffat kept the essential from the original story, we can see that their TV show is really different in many ways. Even their Sherlock's personality is not perfect, we still appreciate his rudeness because he is brilliant and because he has changed since Watson started living with him.Sherlock is a fictional detective. He is portrayed differently in different versions of films and TV series.Although the Sherlock has changed from a hero to an antihero, he is still himself. The TV series showed a process that an antihero is turning to a hero. When he looked back, he finds out that his friends are going to have their own life and that he must become mature and grow up just like his friends. The experience where Waston turned him from a cold-blooded person to a warm and welcoming person is the main reason for why the audience loved him: to see a genius coming back to live a common life.

In conclusion, Sherlock Holmes in the BBC TV series is depicted as someone who is arrogant, cold-blooded, and anti-social. However, the audience still loved him due to the fact that he is intelligent, yet similar to a real person living in the current society. Moreover, his changed toward a better personality and a better person made the audience love him even more. Nowadays, the audience like to see characters that have positive characteristics to be their role models, with little flaws in personality, and that can grow to maturity with the audience as the story progresses.
