Over the past decades, College ranking has become an important part for the perception of the quality of tertiary education around the globe. The significance and scope of college ranking has been growing in unimaginable speeds, forming an industry like pattern. The rankings, especially by the credible institutions, are now an important parameter for parents and students before they make the selection. Obviously, there is certain value in the act of ranking itself, but does, or should the current college ranking system truly matter to students? The answer is negative. In fact, the existing college ranking system is far from the most relevant factor for students before enrollment. Below are the reasons.
College ranking provides largely distorted information, most of which are not even relevant to students. Take the one of the best-known ranking website, QS, for example. Academic reputation is weighted 40%. However, academic reputation is not equivalent to the quality of education that the students are going to get, as many of the top professors/researchers may not be the best teachers. Employer reputation weighs 10%, which is based on the survey of employer impressions around the globe. It is a very subjective parameter, as the name of the school the employees graduated from can have some influence on the employer perception as well, making the factor less than credible. International faculty ration and international student ratio together weigh 10%. However, the website fails to justify why diversification and globalization should matter so much for education quality.
Student-to-faculty ratio and citations per faculty each weighs 20% (QS). These two parameters are considered the more relevant to the quality of education the students are going to get. The former is a simple yet effective measure which indicates the individual care and supervision the student is going to get. The latter focuses on the academic aspects of the colleges in the latest five years. Although the two are considered effective factors in the evaluation of a college, college ranking has gone commercialized with the involvement of outside companies. With the increasing significance of these rankings, colleges are putting more effort and investments into the academic developments and research, so that they can obtain a better score in these factors and thus a better ranking. However, other aspect that are not so easily quantified but are equally important tend to be overlooked, such as teaching and facilities.
Finally, different colleges have different strengths and weaknesses, which cannot be seen from a list of averaged factors (Krupnick). Since some schools are highly specialized, such ranking may not be fair for them since they prejudice the opinion of the students. There have been voices that without any credible sources of information and comparison, ranking remains the best wat to judge the quality of a college. However, it is the details that matter to the students the most. The fantasy of an ideal college may hinder the students from realizing what they really need from a college education. There have been modifications to the current system, such as rankings of majors in addition to colleges, but it doesn’t change the fact that the scoring system is too simplified and distracted to capture the needs of the students.
The emergence of college ranking is largely associated with the need of the students to find a single platform with comprehensive information of different colleges, making the selection process more efficient. It is undeniably truly that such a platform is needed. However, the current college ranking system is based on factors that are not the most relevant to the student. Moreover, the ranking has driven some of the colleges on the path of pursuing high scores that may not truly benefit the students. Thus, despite the efficiency of ranking, it should only be part of the consideration, and certainly should not be the factor that matters the most. Students should focus more on what truly contribute to a fulfilling college education experience, as an alternative to rankings.
